I’m studying literature and have been given an assignment to analyse a poem. I am new to this and am not sure what I should focus on while analysing a poem. Any tips would be appreciated.
The most important thing is to read the poem closely and carefully multiple times. Focus on the structure, rhythm, imagery, themes, literary devices and word choice and how they contribute to the overall meaning. Pay attention to the title, stanzas and lines as well. Take notes as you read to highlight important details. Hope this helps!
I would divide the poem into stanzas and analyze each part separately first. Look at the type of rhyme scheme, repetition of ideas, metaphors and symbols used. Then move to the overall themes, message and mood of the poem. Analyze how the literary devices reinforce the central idea.
Focus on the word choice and imagery first. Think about why the poet chose those specific words and images. Then think about the structure – look at sentence length, line breaks, stanza breaks, rhythm and rhyme scheme. Finally reflect on what deeper meaning those structural choices might be adding. All the best!
Check out Khan Academy videos..they really break down the concepts well. Also, making diagrams and charts helped me a ton to visualize the process and different proteins involved. All the best!
Read the textbook carefully, it has great diagrams that explain the sliding filament theory. Make notes as you read and then revise the notes. Practice lots of questions to test your understanding. You can do it! All the best 🙂
