I am a mechanical engineering student in India. Can someone explain the fundamental concepts of machine design? I am having difficulty understanding things like stress analysis, failure theories and designs of basic machine elements. Any help is greatly appreciated.
The basic machine elements include things like shafts, keys, couplings, gears, bearings, belts and chains. For each of these, you have to determine the appropriate size, material and configuration based on the load and speed requirements. Proper alignment and fit between interacting components is also important.
Start with the simpler concepts and go step by step. Practice as many numerical problems as you can for better understanding. Don’t worry if it seems complicated now, with consistent practice and effort you will develop the necessary skills and intuition in machine design. All the best!
As an engineering student in India, I know rote learning is common. But for machine design to really stick, you must understand the underlying concepts and reasoning behind equations and procedures. Focus your studies on visualizing the real-world applications of what you’re learning.
