I am currently in the first year of mechanical engineering in a reputed college in Pune. But after some reflection, I think computer science may be a better fit for me. How hard is it to change branch in the same college from mechanical to computer science after first year? Will it affect my placements and future career negatively if I change branch? Please advise
Branch change is possible but not guaranteed. You will need to apply and your academics will be a deciding factor. If you have good CGPA after the first year then you have a good chance of changing to computer science. It should not negatively affect your placements and career as long as you work hard and gain the required skills in the new branch.
