I’m an electrical engineering student preparing for placement exams. I’m finding electrical machines tough to understand. Can someone please explain about things like working of single phase and 3 phase transformers, operation of dc machines and induction motors?
For understanding transformers, learn about the basic working principle of induction and mutual induction. Then you can understand how transformers work to step up or step down AC voltages.
The working of DC machines is pretty simple if you understand basic concepts like armature reaction, characteristics and applications of separately excited, series and shunt motors. Focus on learning these fundamentals first.
Induction motors are the most widely used motors. Learn how the rotary magnetic field is produced in the stator, how slip takes place in the rotor and how torque production occurs due to this slip. This will give you a good high level understanding.
